Maine

With approximately one out of every ten Mainers having served in uniform, it is only natural to tie in voting with the myriad contributions of veterans having sacrificed for our liberty. With graves from as far back as the War of 1812 to resident Lincoln having authorized the nation’s first VA home for America’s disabled veterans, the Pine Tree State has countless veterans for voters to honor.

The Office of the Secretary of State Maine has faithfully offered their Vote in Honor of a Veteran program since the election year of 2000. Maine voters who wish to participate in this terrific initiative are offered the possibility to write and submit a tribute that appears in an online book called, Maine Remembers Those Who Served. This unique collection serves as a special way to honor a veteran. In addition, it shows appreciation for all who helped preserve our freedoms, including our right to vote.

In addition, voters are offered the possibility of an “I'm voting in honor of a veteran” button, which features the veteran they are honoring. Tens of thousands of voters have participated in this successful Maine program. Are you ready to tell the world about your loved one who served?
